Ride to Work Scheme

A new bike, a tax break, and a shorter commute. Yes, really.

Ride to work benefit schemes let you get a new bike through your employer instead of paying for it all yourself. The clever bit is the tax exemption: you can offset 32-63% of the price of a new bike, e-bike or scooter. No lump sum, no interest, no catch.

It costs your employer nothing to offer it, and it takes about five minutes for them to sign up.

Workride: the one you have probably heard about

Workride Partner Store - Scotty Browns Bicycle Emporium

Workride is the big player in New Zealand. It is the scheme your workmates are raving about, the one popping up in workplaces all over the country, and the reason a lot of people are suddenly turning up to the office on very nice bikes.

And Scotty Browns is a Workride partner store

That means you can walk into the Emporium, choose from our handpicked range, and have the whole thing sorted through Workride with us. No hunting around, no guesswork. We know the process inside out and we will do the heavy lifting with your employer.

How it works

  1. Check whether your workplace is signed up. If they are not, ask them. It is free for them and they usually say yes.
  2. Come and see us, and choose the bike you want.
  3. We write you a quote.
  4. Your employer approves it through the scheme and pays us.
  5. Our workshop builds it, fits it to you, and you ride it home. You pay your bit through your pay packet.

Which bike?

That is the fun part, and it is where we come in. Road, gravel, mountain or e-bike, we will ask about the riding you do, the hills, the weather and your budget, then handpick something you will genuinely look forward to getting on.

Here is the thing about Scotty Browns: we only stock what we would ride ourselves, and we care about the details most people never see. Every bike is built and checked by our workshop, tuned, and set up to fit you properly, because a bike that fits is a bike you keep riding. Our team eats, sleeps and breathes cycling, and they will treat your new bike like their own. Thirty-odd years on, that is still the whole point of this place.

The Wheel Deal

The Wheel Deal - NZ's Bike To Work Program

The Wheel Deal is another New Zealand bike to work program that works much the same way. If it is the one your workplace uses, flick us a message and we will sort the paperwork with them for you.

Questions people always ask

How much will I actually save?

Somewhere between 32% and 63% of the price, depending on your tax rate and the term you choose. Give us a ballpark budget and we can talk you through the numbers.

My workplace is not signed up. Now what?

Ask them. It is free for employers, there is no ongoing cost, and setup takes minutes. Send them along to Workride or The Wheel Deal to sign up, or get in touch and we will help you make the case.

Can I get an e-bike?

Absolutely. E-bikes are one of the most popular choices, especially if your ride has hills in it or you would rather not arrive at work needing a shower.

Is there a price limit?

Limits are set by the scheme and sometimes by your employer, so it pays to check with them first. We will find you a bike that fits whatever your limit is.
